Om tot een kwaliteitsverbetering in de zorg voor patienten met een craniofaciale afwijking te komen is onderzoek noodzakelijk. Dit onderzoek betreft zowel onderzoek naar de oorzaak en genetische achtergrond als onderzoek naar resultaten van chirurgische technieken. Binnen het craniofaciale centrum van het Erasmus MC zijn reeds 4 promotieonderzoeken afgerond:

• Marieke de Heer - onderzoek naar de genetische achtergrond van het Saethre-Chotzen syndroom
  
• Jolanda Okkerse - onderzoek naar de psychologische problemen bij craniosynostosis
  
• Huisinga-Fischer - onderzoek naar effect van onderkaakverlenging op kauwspieren bij hemifaciale microsomie
  
• Irene Mathijssen - onderzoek naar ontstaan van craniosynostosis

Op het gebied van onderzoek wordt door ons veelvuldig samengewerkt met andere Europese craniofaciale units. Uitwisseling van ervaring vindt plaats via wetenschappelijke bijeenkomsten van de European Society for Craniofacial Surgery en de International Society for Craniofacial Surgery, waarvan zowel drs. Vaandrager als dr. Mathijssen lid zijn.

Het OSAS promotieonderzoek dat op 1 maart 2006 opgestart is onderzoekt de ademhalingsproblemen die frequent voorkomen bij de craniosynostosis syndromen. Deze ademhalingsproblemen lijken vooral veroorzaakt te worden doordat de bovenkaak niet uitgroeit. De gevolgen hiervan voor de zich ontwikkelende hersenen zijn nog onbekend, maar er zijn aanwijzingen dat bijvoorbeeld het gezichtsvermogen ernstige schade kan oplopen. Meer inzicht in de betrokken mechanismen zal leiden tot een duidelijke verbetering in de behandeling en kwaliteit van leven voor deze patienten. De looptijd van dit projekt is 4 jaar. De totale kostenraming voor dit projekt bedraagt ruim 200.000 euro. Tachtig procent van dit budget wordt uitgegeven aan salarissen en de overige 20 % aan materiaalkosten.
