Meta Skills
The use of Meta Skills
By using these Meta skills it makes it easier to go in depth of your learning progress. Since you might know I don't really like reflecting but i understand the necessity. By reflecting you create an image of your learning which can be very useful now but especially at later stage of my study. I'll divide my Meta skills in to 5 different categories, which will be explained in this report.
Define
For this certain category I can come up with some different but similar kind of examples. Instead of starting from the beginning i'll start with the actual use of this skill during my deadline assignments. For instance when I finished my IWOB poster I thought I was completely done and could easily present it in 5 minutes. However when I practiced the actual presentation it appeared that it was well over the 5 minutes (8.42). At that moment I realised that I had a serious problem. Why? Because I only started practicing 1 day before the presentation. So in my overconfidence I thought I was on the right track, which I basically was because my poster looked good, but i forgot the essential goal of the assignment which was presenting! So having this problem I needed to find a solution. I looked at my poster again and started thinking how to summarise the story in to 5 minutes, so i started looking at the information it self by defining it into relevant content for the presentation. By doing this I was indirectly and without knowing practicing my presentation and automatically I got more in depth with my subject. This made me aware how hard it is to create a short and valid strong story from a lot data.
Design
This is something that I feel is implemented in every lecture we had and is playing a big role inside of the IBIS course. I've used this a lot not to put an actual design on the table but more of creatively thinking about a design and how to achieve it. I can clearly see now that the whole point of PSD 1 was about brainstorming, imaging , planning , writing and analysing which i used for IWOB and FOB. At first I thought that these were dividable between the different PSD lectures but I realised that the above mentioned activities were used for every class of IBIS. During this learning journey everything that I have been taught was about preparing myself for assignments which should be very clear but for some reason I didn't realise it until I started writing the meta skills.
Execute
I mostly used this during FOB and IWOB and sometimes during PSD. For the business lectures it was really used for getting yourself familiar in executing your ideas after your created the design. They mainly used this to prepare yourself for the assignments. This was really usefull because I familiarised myself with the skills needed to fulfil the criteria of the projects
Learn
I often feel like i'm unorganised and that I have tendency not to the things that are necessary to do. During this first term we have been flooded with information to process in a short time. I really needed to step up my game and sometimes even lost focus. This made me aware of the importancy of planning ahead, being critical to myself, standing open to feedback and the value of failing. I've felt uncomfortable during this term by failing on certain points and things, but now i honestly can say that I see that i've improved by failing, so can you even call it failing? I don't think so cause in my opinion this is most effective way of learning since you're down on the ground and searching for a solution. Basically failing creates a certain need to achieve your goals and do it better next time.
Lead
I cannot really recall any real leading skills I developed the first term but what I can say is that I loved the motivation of the people of IBIS and it was inspiring to see the different cultures active on this course and impact that it has on their creativity but also on their fellow students. I hope I will keep experiencing and appreciate this environment and expect that hidden skills inside me will be developed either by teachers or students. Cause I think the students on this course are as important as the teachers, because we all only can reach our goals through team building.
