No. The "problem" is with the matheramazzi forgetting the very basics
of math;
that multiplication is just a short-hand way of doing addition ie 'lots
of'.
 eg:

3 x 2 = 6     because   (1,1) + (1,1) + (1,1) = 6         and.........
2 x 3 = 6          "         (1,1,1) + (1,1,1)      = 6

note: NO choice to declare the answer as (-6)

Now the "establishment concensus" would have us accept that
(-3) x (-2) = (+6)   when it is (-6) ONLY

Who cares, when less than zero numbers are purely imaginary, and of as
much interest as the fairies at the bottom of the garden?
The tragedy occurs when it is seen that the shortenning of a speeding
train as per SR is but such an IMAGINARY missing distance, and is
purely due to the mistaken acceptence of the notation for direction in
the LT's being altered to SUIT the theory!
