The calculus was created to deal with your struggle, because clearly
D in Dx/Dt can never actually be zero but it can be as close to zero
as we wish. For example, if x = 30 miles and t = 1 hour then I'm
driving at 30 mph by definition. By making D = 2.778e-4 (=1/3600)
I get D*x = 44 feet and D * t = 1 second, Dx/Dt = 44 fps.
Now I'm travelling at 30 mph but only for a second. If I make D
even smaller I can do it for a millisecond, but it is still 30 mph,
the needle on the speedometer doesn't change. Many speedometers
are graduated in both kilometers / hour and miles / hour. I mile
= 1.6 kilometers, the speed doesn't change, just the units we choose
to measure it by.
