After the death of our
previous Leonberger, we decided to, with the summer holiday in sight,
remain a few months dog-less. But blood crawls where it shouldn't,
and still getting over the grief of the loss of our previous Leonberger,
we swiftly started orientating for a new Leonberger. My wife preferred
a puppy, I on the other hand preferred a young dog who needed to
be relocated. After the necessary searching and research, we heard
of Djenghis. A relocation dog, two and a half years of age, who
had been returned to the breeder in Wanroy. We found two and a half
years a year to old, but we contacted the breeder anyway.
Kennel Usi Maya Ye, fam Somers, thats where Djenghis was.
The first contact over phone was pleasant, but there was a difference
between what the breeder wanted and what we wanted. Even with
the differences we agreed to go and take a look at him. On a Friday
night in June 2001 we went to Rob and Sonja Somers in Wanroy,
where we were hospitably received. A trio of beautiful large dogs,
including a tremendous beautiful stud sped towards us followed
by a young pup. We expected a beautiful dog, we had heard that
here and there, but this was more than we expected. A gorgeous
large head with lot's of black hair and with a black mask. A back
as straight as an arrow, with a light way of moving and very pretty
proportions. Because of his past he had a gap in his development,
but this dog had a lot of potential.
More important was his character. Djenghis was an open dog without
reservation towards strangers. He came to us frank and free; just
like the other 3 dogs. Djenghis was situated at his breeder in
a family with 3 little children and at one moment he was chewing
on a little bone between 2 playing children. With a daughter that
had to become 3 years and a family expansion coming, this secured
us of his kindness towards children.
We were convinced so we looked if we could meet in the middle
with the breeder. Both wanting the best for Djenghis as a starting
point, one issue remained. Rob Somers wanted Djenghis with his
qualities to be available for breeding, while we only wanted him
to be a domestic dog. On that point we couldnt agree and
we went home.
Soon after this we contacted fam. Somers because we said more
and more to each other: Djenghis is our dog. The consequence
of being available for mating we took for granted. Nowadays we
agree, without any doubts, for the full 100% with it. The rest
was settled in a trice. Three till today very satisfied parties:
Djenghis, fam. Somers and we.
