Een verhaal

"It's a beautiful day, sir." I took a moment to finish shaving and the politely answered; "Yes, Janus. It's a beautiful day for an attack." I used the towel to dry my face off "Go prepare the men, we attack at noon.". Today, would be the day we would wage another battle against the endless hordes of the Dark Lord. We had been skirmishing with them for days, Today we finally had the opportunity to meet them head-on. No more running. This time, they had nowhere to go. Their commander was a brutal man, who had razed entire villages during his campaign. He needed to be stopped. I walked out of my tent and gazed at the rising sun. A beautiful day indeed I heard myself thinking. My eyes were soon drawn towards the northern passage and the enemy that was fortified at that position. Although I couldn't see beyond the passage I could vividly remember the ruins that laid beyond. The battle that had occurred there, so many years ago and all the men that had died there.

A dark day in history, The day that changed me forever. I heard Janus approaching me. "Sir." He did is best to say it as formal as possible. "The runner from the Center army reported that Lord Vadius and his troops are ready to strike at your command." "Thank you Janus, send back a runner to tell them we will attack at noon." He saluted me and took off in a rush. I simply had to admire how these troops had changed over the years. These men were extremely loyal and would follow me to the underworld and back. Not used to be like this, used to be men fighting for their own gains. I know, I used to be one of those; I did anything to get more power. In battles I would make sure I wasn't in the front lines, at the times I was not in battle, I would make sure I would suck up to the higher ranked to ascertain my promotions. During one point in my career I also had someone assassinated to make sure I'd get up higher. Finally I gained the rank of Optio, a second in command to a centurion.

Besides that, you have also shown your men a valuable lesson and after you charged in they followed your example and their courage saved the lives of various other soldiers." At that moment I realised that the gods had heard my prayers and had saved my life. I decided that I would spent the rest of my life paying my gratitude and made sure I would things that would make them proud of me. Davius continued "We were just in time to save what was left of the members of the different factions and to extract them before the rest of the enemies army could respond. We have lost the battle and many good men, but you have showed that even in defeat there are small victories, remember that my friend." He hoped out of the cart and as he did he said "Until we meet again." I realised we would meet again soon. In a world drowned in war, we would surely meet again. From that day on I decide to do my best to make the Greek-Roman army the best there is. From that day I quickly rose to rank and shifting the army from self-centred militia into courageous full fledged soldiers. My changes took notice and soon I was promoted to Legatus Legionis, one of the highest rank in roman military by the Emperor himself.

As my memories drift to an end I suddenly notice the sun creeping up higher and higher, "It's nearly noon." I hear myself say. I quickly walk back into my tent and put on my gear. Today is the day we crush those responsible for the massacre all those years ago. As I walk out of the tent, I'm met by Janus who has my horse ready for me. I saddle up and ride out towards the meeting place. Towards my friend Davius. Together we will ride. Together we will vanquish the evil, Together we will do good.

"Listen up guys, Today is the day. We will crush our enemies today." He took a moment to catch his breath and then continued. "Grab your gear and get ready to move out in 10 minutes!" He turned around and walked out of the tent. As soon as he was gone men started preparing. I put on my armour and stopped for a moment to help one of my mates with his. Soon all off the men in the tent were ready. Shortly after we heard the horn, we moved to the central plaza; the Principia. Our camp was simple and unlike the standard we would normally built, Our legion commander had decided that due to the position of the camp it would be impossible to use the square layout we'd normally used. Our camp was situated at a cliff, having the barracks for the men at the foot of the cliff and headquarters and commander tents on top off the cliff. We were might at by Janus at the plaza. Janus was the right hand man of Legion commander Tigerus Deltii. Deltii had fought at Bendiar years ago, They say it was a battle that had marked him forever. "Men," Janus said, I quickly shifted my attention to him again. "Today we fight for our people, if we loose here, they will once again invade our lands. We can't let that happen and won't let it happen. We fight under command of General Deltii who will do anything to take his vengeance upon our enemies. Fight brave and courageous and they will know what we are made off, to battle we go." He gave us a moment to let these words sink in and then continued "For the emperor, move out." The centurions quickly started giving orders and within a few moments the entire legion was on the move.

Een stap terug

We saw them coming from a distance. One could only admire the punctuality and order these soldiers showed. We were already standing ready when our allies form the Greek-roman faction arrived. In front you could see the proud Legionnaire's and in the back you could just see the long spears of the hoplite's. I had seen it before, but was still surprised, every time their army just seem to get more and more impressive. Soon a small group if cavalry rode past the their troops and now I could see it were the generals that would lead us to battle today, General Tigerus Deltii and the Grandmaster of earth. I felt glad inside, I knew our opponents wouldn't stand a chance today. All the omens are on our side, the weather, the numbers, the generals, the terrain, our morale and the fact we had been training a long time for this very day. In my time I had seen more battles and I knew not much could go wrong today. After all troops are in place the general holds a speech to boost our morale even further. I have heard it more than once, So I'am not really paying attention this time.

I'am thinking about after this battle, when I can finally see my family again, Haven't seen them for over 2 years now, but after our victory today I know I will see them again. In the distance I can see our enemies getting ready, hordes of Undead, Orcs, Barbarians, Mercenaries and many other. Though they are many it's obvious that their army has been minimized to reinforce the pass to the south. Beyond them I can just see the passage that leads to Bendiar. Once a flourishing town, Now no more than ruins. The general finishes his speech and I can hear our troops taunt. We start moving out, slowly but steadily. Half-way trough the field we can see the enemy preparing his first volley of arrows. We prepare ourselves and for impact and manage to minimize casualties. The Romans soon take point and continue in Testudo shape as we follow their lead. As far as three quarters down the way as we suddenly see the barbarians break free from the enemy line and storming towards us. Terrifying as it is we also realise this is a tactical disaster on their side. WE quickly reform the line and fill the gaps at the necessary points. We quickly see the Orcs following the barbarian lead and soon see the rest following them. The Barbarians hit the middle of our ranks, the place were the most experienced fighters are and the barbarians quickly see their numbers dwindle. More dangerous is their berserker rage though and quickly we are losing numbers as well. The second group of Orcs soon hit our ranks and a small breakthrough puts our troop on the frontline of battle. On my right I can see a few Knights hacking their way trough line after line of enemies. I'am soon engaged in battle myself and counter a Big ugly Orc swinging his axe around wildly. I quick duck and a forward stab into his body put him down. As I retract my sword form his body I can already see my next target, a Orc cutting up various of my allies with his Orcish sword. I rush towards the help, killing a barbarian that is in the way. The next moment my sword finds the way towards the back of the Orcs spine.

The moment after I see an ally throw his spear just over my head and I quickly turn around to see a Mercenary drop to the ground. I turn back and nod towards the soldier as an appreciation for saving my life. I look around for a moment and see not direct threat. We are already pushing back our enemies. I quickly move myself towards the front-line, no resting until the all enemies are either down or routing. As I move up I can see the generals unit charging up from the left flank of our enemies. Taking out most of the undead archers were constantly firing at our lines. We can see the enemy breaking up and trying to flee, I follow a small group chasing the enemy. While the rest of the army focuses on the groups that are left and the Barbarian berserkers that are still chopping trough our lines. Our eager attempt to follow the enemy into the cliff seems a mistake though and soon we find ourselves under fire by more archers on the cliff sides surrounding us. We are promptly surrounded by troops and we realize we have ventured to far from the main army to receive help from then. We also realize fighting is no an option and surrender our weapons. I had hoped to see my family again, but now. Due to my eagerness to finish the enemy once and for all it might be even longer before or will see them again, If I will ever see the again. We are quickly rounded up and taken away from the battlefield. The battle is a victory, but not for the few men that are captured by the enemy this day, including me. As we are lead out of the passage we can hear the victorious war cries of our army. The passage is reclaimed and the enemy is pushed back, but we will have a hard time up ahead of us.
