Esteemed Player.....

As your humble Archivist, I present here the official rules of play for the Game.

Rather than reproduce the rules of Chess here, I will simply make the following two points:
(1) all that new Players must know about the rules of Chess are
    (a) how the pieces are set up on the board and
    (b) how each piece moves on the board; and,
(2) there are on-line reference sources by which new Players may acquire the formal rules of chess.

It is suggested that new Players print out these rules and their accompanying charts for reference during play.

Rules of Play

  1. COMPATIBILITY WITH TRADITIONAL GAME OF CHESS.

All rules of the game of Chess apply except as modified in these rules.

  2. EXOTERIC MOVES AND ESOTERIC MOVES.

Every move begins with an Exoteric Move. That Square is termed the Exoteric Square.

Half of all Exoteric Moves result in an Esoteric Move, which automatically transfers the Piece to another Square on the Board. That Square is termed the Esoteric Square.

A Piece cannot be moved into any Square occupied by another Piece of its own color.

Whenever an Exoteric Move does not result in an Esoteric Move, all the traditional rules of moves apply.

  3. CAPTURE.

Your opponent's Piece is captured if it occupies the Esoteric Square your Piece moves into.

Your opponent's piece is not captured if it occupies the Exoteric Square your Piece moves through on its way to the Esoteric Square (see Pawn Exceptions, below).

Whenever an Exoteric Move does not result in an Esoteric Move, all the traditional rules of capture apply.

  4. END OF GAME.

There is no Check nor Checkmate in the Game. The Game ends only when a Player's King has been captured by an opponent's Esoteric Move. Any Piece making an Esoteric Move into an Esoteric Square occupied by an opponent's King immediately captures the King and ends the Game.

The King cannot be captured nor threatened by any Exoteric Move (see Pawn Exceptions, below).

Games in which neither Player is able to capture the opponent's King are pronounced a draw.

  5. KNIGHT EXCEPTION.

All pieces, except for the Knight, "pass through" other pieces (regardless of color) that stand between the Exoteric Square and the Esoteric Square. Knights cannot make an Esoteric Move if any Piece, regardless of color, stands between its Exoteric Square and Esoteric Square.

  6. PAWN EXCEPTIONS.
    1. The Pawn captures an opponent's Piece, including the King, when it makes an Exoteric Move resulting in an Esoteric Move if, and only if, the following conditions are met:
      1. The Exoteric Move is into the Player's 7th rank;
      2. The capture is made according to the traditional rules of Chess (one diagonal square move forward into a square occupied by opponent's piece); and,
      3. The Esoteric Move is legal (a Piece of the same color does not occupy the Esoteric Square).
    2. The Pawn cannot make an Exoteric Move into a Square directly in front of it if that Square is occupied by an opponent's Piece: it can only make Exoteric Moves into Squares occupied by the opponent's Pieces via the traditional rule of Pawn capturing (one diagonal square move only when occupied by opponent's piece). This rule does not affect Moves where the Exoteric Square in front of the Pawn is unoccupied.

As in traditional rules of Chess, the Pawn has the option of moving either one or two squares only on its move from the second rank.

There is no promotion of the pawn in the Game. Upon reaching its seventh rank (opponent's second rank), the Pawn returns to the first rank (opponent's eighth rank) and continues play from there as a Pawn.

  7. RULES DELETED FROM TRADITIONAL RULES OF CHESS.

The following rules are deleted from play:
    Castling.
    En passant.
    Promotion of the pawn.
    Check/Mate.

  8. DEFINITIONS.
    1. Exoteric Move: The movement of a piece into a square, all of which occur according to the traditional rules of chess (except for the four moves deleted from play). Half of all such possible moves result in an Esoteric Move: in such cases, any potential capture of an opponent's piece occupying that Exoteric Square is invalidated.
    2. Exoteric Square: The square into which an Exoteric Move is made.
    3. Esoteric Move: The movement of a piece that occurs when it is moved into an Exoteric Square it cannot occupy - - in which case it is immediately transferred to its correct Square. An Esoteric Move is illegal if its Esoteric Square is occupied by a piece of the same color. If the Esoteric Square is occupied by an opponent's piece, then it is captured and removed from the board.
    4. Esoteric Square: The square into which an Esoteric Move is made.

  9. OFFICIAL ESOTERIC MOVES.

The following 8 charts detail the official Esoteric Moves of the Game.

Moves which do not result in Esoteric Moves are not depicted here.

The numbers below refer to the official numbering (0 to 63) of the 64 Squares of the Game Board, an example of which follows these charts.

Each of the 8 charts below is divided into 8 sections, each one of which is identified by the number (0 to 63) of an Exoteric Square.

Each of the 8 sections is divided into 2 columns. The column on the left gives the notation for the Color (B = Black, W = White) of the Piece (K = King, Q = Queen, B = Bishop, N = Knight, R = Rook, P = Pawn) that triggers an Esoteric Move within the specified Exoteric Square. The column on the right gives the number (0 to 63) of the Esoteric Square into which the specified Piece moves.

By way of example:

  1. Assuming we wished to determine whether an Esoteric Move resulted from moving a White Queen into Square 5, we would locate the section labeled Square 5 in the first chart and then check to see if "WQ" is listed or not. We see "BQ" in its place, so we know that moving the White Queen into Square 5 does not trigger an Esoteric Move to another Square.

  2. On the other hand, we see that moving a White Bishop into Square 5 produces an Esoteric Move to Square 1, that moving a Black Knight into the same Square triggers an Esoteric Move of the Knight to Square 13, and so on.

Esoteric Moves attributed to Pawns in the second and seventh charts below are italicized because they represent Moves which cannot occur within the Rules of Play for the Game Level. They are included because these are Moves which do occur when Self-Realization and Artistic-Creative Level Games are played independent of the Rules for the Game Level.

10. OFFICIAL GAME BOARD.

Following is the official Game Board: it includes the numbering of each of the 64 Squares as well as the designations for the 8 Vertical and Horizontal ranks, which detail the integration of the Chess, I Ching, and Dyadic Mathematics Correlation.

Two views of the Game Board are presented below: the first is the Board as seen from the perspective of the Player playing the White Pieces and the second, from the perspective of the Player playing the Black Pieces.
