The Amsterdam media consist of 3 local television stations and 5 local radiostations, all under supervision of Salto Omroep. But not everybody is that happy with Salto.
There are the daily Amsterdam-oriented Dutch newspaper Het Parool and the free weekly local Amsterdam newspapers De Echo and Amsterdams Stadsblad (both have different region editions). The last two distribute the advertisements of UPC with a layout that is typical for joepiecíe: a full page looking like news and editorial, with at the top in teeny tiny microletters advertentie, advertorial or even completely nothing at all. And these newspapers keep on going with this readers' deception without any hesitation, while they have for a long time silently a heavy shortcoming in their distribution and home delivery, see webmate Keitje.
There are several internet-cafe's spreadout over the city center but easyEverything in the Regulierstraat (near Rembrandt Square) is the biggest and best.
Free websurfing is in the Waag Nieuwmarkt (not recommended) and in the libraries. The main library (on the Prinsengracht) has ten monitors on the ground floor and another ten on the fourth floor.
Be very careful wherever you are, for "keeping an eye on your luggage" is not much more than a way to register the time of the theft.
The official website of the City of Amsterdam has been awarded a couple of times. Very useful is the free use of its city map, where you find the exact spot of an Amsterdam address.

Er zijn verscheidene internet-cafe's in de hoofdstad met easyEverything in de Regulierstraat (bij het Rembrandtplein) als grootste en beste.
Gratis websurfen kan in de Waag Nieuwmarkt (niet aan te bevelen) en de bibliotheken. Bibliotheek Prinsengracht heeft tien schermen op de begane grond en nog eens tien op de vierde etage.
Wees voorzichtig. Overal geldt dat het "in het oog houden" van bagage niet veel meer is dan een manier om de tijd te registreren waarop het delict plaatsvindt.
De officiële website van de Gemeente Amsterdam is al enkele keren in de prijzen gevallen. Zeer bruikbaar is haar gratis toegankelijke stadskaart waar je de precieze plek van een Amsterdams huisadres vindt.

It started so good . . . In 1989 the first HackTic newsletter came out: articles about hacking, free telephone calls, virusses and more of those kind of computer technics for the interested amateur. Founded by Rop Gonggrijp and Paul Jongsma. In May 1993 they managed, together with Felipe Rodriquez, Matthew Lewis and Cor Bosman to get XS4ALL operational: the first Internet Service Provider for the common man in the Netherlands was born. With the help of NLnet, the only internet provider in Nederland and he only dealed with businesses. On Januar 15, 1994, XS4ALL and De Balie opened De Digitale Stad (the Digital City of Amsterdam). DDS is FreeNet: free to use for everyone, to bring politics and civilians closer together. The DDS made internet known to the Dutch. Meant as a temporary project, but it still exists. There was only the use of telephone medems so XS4ALL and DDS were both mainly Amsterdam oriented in the beginning (local calls are cheap in the evening and weekends).

Het begon zo goed . . . In 1989 kwam het eerste blad HackTic uit met artikelen over hacken, gratis bellen, virussen en meer van dit soort computertechnieken voor geinteresseerde hobbyisten, opgezet door Rop Gonggrijp en Paul Jongsma. And now has . . . De Digitale Stad (dds.nl) went commercial and took the name and url with them! The original goals are radically changed. From September 2001 it is paying time for the dds.nl clients. No free services anymore. A number of dds-ers from the very beginning have started a new Vereniging Open Domein (VOD) and with it the DeDS-project, a free website provider, among others to give the old dds.nl. member a free place on the web. So did I and I have my little space now with the free host  deds.nl.

En nu is . . . De Digitale Stad (dds.nl) is op de commerciële toer gegaan (met behoud van naam en url!). Van de oorspronkelijke ideële doelstellingen is niets over. Per september 2001 moet er betaald worden voor elke service. Een aantal dds-ers van het eerste uur hebben nu een nieuwe Vereniging Open Domein (VOD) opgericht met eronder het DeDS-projekt, een gratis homepage provider voor onder andere de gedupeerden van de oude dds.nl. Ook ík heb mijn onderdakje gevonden bij de host  deds.nl.

In the beginning it was Kabel Tv Amsterdam  KTA.
Since A2000 became Chello with all the Amsterdam cable internet facilities in september 1999, both your email and website names may change into something with chello, whether you like it or not. Both will for a certain length of time be directed to the new names, but not for ever. So you are obliged to notice all you know and don't know of the change of name from your email and homepage. On top of that you will have to submit your websites again to search engines and others. You must try to find and notify the people and companies who uses your url-address as a link. They too can put time and effort into it to keep non-working links out of their websites!
      And that for a unnecessary name change !
The connecting time (is the time needed to make connection to a site) has gone up drasticly, especially to the server of the websites of their own a2000 customers. Fast downloading has little effect, when every piece of a website needs seconds only to make a connection.
      Instead of medium-speed for all there is now
      high-speed for the next in the waiting-queue
The mail- and newsservers are suffering from the same problems and are quite some times unreachable. The capacity of the newsservers is that big that (non-binary) articles may be disappeared within as little as 2 days, as in the a2000 cable users newsgroup a2000.agvk. Is now a part of Coax.
By the way, the 2e free email address (not to be confused with the alias!) as well as our 2e own website-url (both given to us by A2000) may be taken away by Chello: provides only one email address and one website-url of 10Mb of space.

In het begin was het Kabel Tv Amsterdam  KTA.
Nu A2000 naar Chello is overgegaan met al haar kabel-internet faciliteiten (september 1999) zal dit tevens inhouden dat zowel je emailadres als je homepageadres van naam kunnen veranderen (iets met chello erin). Men zal wel je email en homepage-surfers doorsturen, maar slechts niet voor altijd, zodat je toch verplicht bent iedereen op de hoogte te stellen van je gewijzigde email en homepage benamingen. Ook moet je je dus weer opnieuw aanmelden bij search-engines en proberen al degenen te achterhalen die jouw url-adres als link hebben opgenomen. Ook zij kunnen aan de slag om frustrerend dode links van hun site te houden!
      En dat voor een onnodige naamsverandering !
De zgn 'connecting time' (tijd die nodig is om een connectie te maken) is flink toegenomen, vooral naar de server waar de homepages van de eigen a2000 klanten op staan. Een snelle download tijd heeft weinig zin, als elk stukje website een seconden lange connection-time nodig heeft.

      hoge-snelheid voor de volgende in de wachtrij
Ook de mail- en newsservers hebben hieronder te lijden en zijn dan ook bij regelmaat niet bereikbaar. De capaciteit van de nieuwsservers is ook van dien aard dat vaak (geen binaire) berichten al binnen 2 dagen verwijderd zijn, bv van de a2000 kabel belangengroep a2000.agvk. Is nu deel geworden van Coax.
Zelfs is de kans aanwezig dat zowel ieders 2e gratis emailadres (niet te verwarren met het alias!) als ieders 2e homepage-url van elk 5Mb gaat verdwijnen. Chello verschaft slechts één emailadres en één homepage van 10Mb ruimte.

Second website? Yes. However never been emphasized, the A2000 client has beside the two email adresses (with each their own alias), also been given 2 website url's of both 5Mb of space.
And why? Just free and easy for each of he/she and she/he an own web-address.

Tweede homepage? Ja. Hoewel nooit echt benadrukt, heeft de A2000-klant naast de 2 email adressen (met ieder hun eigen alias) ook 2 homepage adressen van elk 5Mb groot gekregen.
Wat is het Nut? Gratis en voor niks voor hij/zij en zij/hij elk een eigen webadres.

To change to a satellite disk is for an internetter in the region Amsterdam extra expensive for A2000 allows only a cable internet subscription in combination with a "working tv-connection". Keeps costing you an unwanted minimal expence of an extra f.15,-. a month. This type of "combination sales" should be banned!

Om op een schotelantenne over te stappen is voor een internetter wel extra duur: A2000 staat een kabel internet abonnement slechts toe in kombinatie met een "werkende tv-aansluiting", zodat dit ongewild minimaal f.15,-. per maand blijft kosten. Deze vorm van koppelverkoop zou niet moeten kunnen!

The pressure group NLIP looks after the interests of around 80% of the Dutch Internet Providers which customers can be private as well as business. Because of evil practice A2000/Chello was even for a while striked off the NLIP membership list (link leden).

De belangengroep NLIP behartigt de belangen van rond 80% van de Nederlandse Internet Providers die zowel particulieren als bedrijven als klant kunnen hebben. Een tijdlang is A2000/Chello door haar wanpraktijken van de NLIP ledenlijst (link leden) geschrapt.

There is still hope as, besides the future possibility to do websurfing by satellite, the government is finally making an effort for the right of share-using of the cablenetwork. And our national KPN-telecom is busy with Mxstream (a type of fast isdn-line).
So, there is still some hope!

Er is nog steeds hoop, want naast de toekomstige mogelijkheid om via een satelliet te internetten, is de politiek bezig om het mede-gebruik van de kabel af te dwingen. Ook telecombedrijf KPN komt nu met Mxstream (een soort snelle isdn-lijn).
Dus er is nog steeds hoop!

To keep informed, stay tuned at the local stations like A1, A2, Mystèr and (in between the reports of all the dance parties and more of that empty-headed stuff) AT5. But not without a local tv guide!. The more Amsterdam oriented 'old media' daily newspaper Het Parool publishes once in a blue moon an article about the problems there are with monopolist A2000 regarding the New Media.
If you can, read the newsgroups a2000.agvk, alt.nl.kabel.algemeen  and  nl.internet.providers.

Blijf op de hoogte en hou de lokale tv in de gaten zoals A1, A2, Mystèr en (tussen de verslagen door van alle dance-party's en andere gedachteloze bezigheden) AT5. Maar niet zonder lokale tv gids!. Ook het Amsterdams georienteerd 'oude medium' dagblad Het Parool heeft soms een mededeling over de problemen die er zijn met het A2000-monopolie wat betreft de Nieuwe Media.

From may 1st 1999, CNN and MTV are back on the Amsterdam cable. With it goes the monthly cable payments up from f.16,52 to f.18,77, and from 1-1-2000 it will be increased to f.20,50.
UPC is since september 1999 the television station provider for Amsterdam and its surroundings.
The yearly program updating last september 1, 1999 didn't really improve much: RaiUno (Italian) and TVE (Spanish) are taken off the cable.
The program updating in September 2001 brought those two stations back, but dispite of all the recommendations from the APR (Program Advice Council) there is still no Eurosport or Discovery on the cable.

Vanaf 1 mei 1999 zijn CNN en MTV terug op de Amsterdamse kabel. Dan gaat ook het maandelijkse abonnement van f.16,52 naar f.18,77, en wordt dan per 1-1-2000 nog eens verhoogd tot f.20,50.
Sinds september 1999 is UPC de televisie zender provider voor Amsterdam en omgeving.
Met de jaarlijkse programma-aanbod wijziging van 1 september 1999 is er niet veel verbeterd: RaiUno (Italiaans) en TVE (Spaans) zijn verdwenen van de cable.
De laatste programmawijziging van september 2001 bracht deze twee laatsten weer terug, maar ondanks de aanbevelingen van de APR is er nog steeds geen Eurosport of Discovery op de kabel.

Amsterdam Program Raad
now called Stichting Algemene Programma Raad or APR, is an advisory committee only. It was formed with the sale of the Amsterdam cablenet to a private business called A2000 to choose the television stations for the cablenet. But already from the beginning it had no influence and has been kept out of negotiations between the city and monopolist A2000. It feels like APR tunes her advice to the wishes of the successor of A200, called UPC. The city of Amsterdam has no Programmaraad of her own: the entire region of Amsterdam falls under the Stichting Algemene Programma Raad.

nu genoemd Stichting Algemene Programma Raad of kortweg APR, is slechts een adviserend orgaan. Deze werd bij de verkoop van het gemeentelijke kabelnet speciaal ingesteld om te bepalen welke zenders op de kabel zouden moeten komen. Deze had echter al vanaf het begin geen invloed en is geheel buiten de onderhandelingen tussen de gemeente Amsterdam en monopolist A2000 gehouden. Het lijkt wel dat de APR haar advies op de wensen van UPC afstemt. De gemeente Amsterdam heeft geen eigen programmaraad: de gehele regio Amsterdam valt onder de Stichting Algemene Programma Raad.

In the new millennium the people of Amsterdam and surroundings will have a new set of television stations they can zap through or look at. Whether it is an improvement or not is of no concern for the ones who are making the decisions.
So, what do we have:

A possible grouping:
news packet (CNN, BBCWorld, and stuffing like a2000 cablenews); educational packet (National Geographic, BBC1&2, and stuffing); sport packet (Eurosport only if we're lucky, and stuffing); music packet (MTV, TMF, and stuffing); tv-series and film packet (fox, tnt, scifi, and stuffing).

For the same quality and variety of the stations like it was before the sellout to a2000, we probably will have to take virtually ALL the packets and that for a price which will be around f.50,00. That includes then a sickmaking expensive stuffings of stations you don't even wanna watch for free.

Voor dezelfde kwaliteit en gevarieerd-heid aan zenders die er was vóór de verkoop aan a2000 zullen we vrijwel ALLE pakketten moeten nemen met een prijs die wel in de buurt van f.50,00. zal liggen. Waarbij dan wel inbegrepen een ziekmakend-dure berg opvulling aan zenders.

A decoder can only operate with one tv with vcr at the time. For every tv (livingroom, bed- and childrens-room, next to your pc) in the house you must rent a decoder if you just want to keep your current possibilities. Even thén you are limited in recording your favorite programs: your vcr can record different stations by changing its own channels. A decoder cannot do that. So a new costs-are-for-you-product will be introduced: a decoder-video combinations may be available for rent in mid-2000 from your cable-tv provider for a not that cheap price. You may send your own expensive vcr's to the scrap-yard.

Een decoder kan slechts hooguit één tv met vcr tegelijk bedienen. Voor élke tv (kamer, slaap- en kinderkamer, naast je pc) moet dan een decoder gehuurd worden wil men enkel dezelfde mogelijkheden blijven behouden. Zelfs dán word je beperkt in het opnemen van programma's: je vcr kan verschillende zenders opnemen door zijn eigen kanalen te veranderen. Maar dat kan niet met een decoder. Daarom zullen er mogelijk medio 2000 decoder-videorecorder combinaties te huur worden aangeboden die je eigen vcr's naar de schroothoop gaan verwijzen. Goedkoop zullen ze niet zijn.

And . .
BBC 1&2 are possibly not broadcasting anymore to the Netherlands by the end of this year.
Eurosport and Discovery Channel will not be seen on the Amsterdam cable, in spite of the strong wishes of the television viewers and APR.
Amstelveen was almost the next victim. Its local government was trying to sell its cablenetwork to A2000. The viewers strongly disagree with it, as you can read in opzet of sulligheid.
