Deland Majik wint de WK in Kroatië

Van 18 tot 24 september 2004 werd in Rijeka, Kroatië, de WK Parachutespringen gehouden. Het team Deland Majik (USA) werd 1e, met maar liefst 8 punten voorsprong op de Fransen die 2e werden. Het onderstaande is overgenomen van de website van Paracentrum Texel, waar teamlid Gary Smith in de zomer werkt en vele Nederlandse FS-teams ondersteunt:     Deland Majik World Champion! New world champion Gary Smith of Deland Majik writes... A dream of becoming a World Champion It started a long time ago. I made my first jump in 1983, but it was only after my first world meet experience in 1991 (Where I met the famous Mafia Brothers from Holland) that I knew I wanted to be a world champion. I completed my law degree in 1993 and worked for 2 years in South Africa. All this time I jumped on weekends and did training camps with the distant dream in sight. In 1995 I decided to give up my home and all in South Africa and move to the USA to train full time with the South African team. We came 5th that year and then did another 2 years and ended 3rd in the world in 1997. Still I was hungry to win but we had no money and were broke.. The next plan was to stay in the USA and try to get into a team to win the USA nationals. A tough task...but Majik was born and to this date we have won every meet we have entered except the USA nationals of 2002 which we had to win to compete in the world meet in 2003. So the dream had to continue.. We stayed together and then in 2003 we won the nationals to qualify and represent the USA in Croatia in 2004. We trained and worked hard and arrived in Croatia ready to give it our best. We were up against a very strong French team and knew there was no guarantees in the meet. The meet went well and it was our day.. My dream has been achieved.. And the strange thing is nothing has changed. Life goes on and so must I.... Next week I fly to California to compete once again in the USA nationals.. I have many thanks to say but for now I want to thank Susanne for not giving up on me, and for being there for Luca and I, since I was away from home so much. Also to ParacentrumTexel..(my summer home). I have worked on Texel since 1995 and this has made it possible for me train during the winter months for all these years. Without all of you this dream might not have come true. I hope to see you all next season To conclude ... it has been a long road. I have loved every minute of it but it has not always been easy. Huge sacrifices have been made (by many) in order to achieve this goal.
