ABSTRACT OF THE
PLAY: Set in a newspaper library in a constant state of chaos, the librarian,
Lucy, cannot cope with the load of work and is regularly prevented from
even trying by the somewhat curious assembly of messengers, editors, and
leader writers of the paper. Yet, in spite of the general chaos, people
get on quite well. Things change when an assistant librarian, Leslie, is
appointed, a girl with a passion for organisation. Within a few months
she manages to get things straight, but meanwhile, and consequently, the
working atmosphere deteriorates. Leslie and Lucy become exponents of cool
efficiency and heart-warming chaos respectively and, not surprisingly,
the library people stick to their librarian. Towards the end of the play
external circumstances force them to reconsider, however; and what seemed
to be a clear-cut choice suddenly becomes rather complex. Alphabetical
Order was first presented at the Hampstead Theatre Club by arrangement
with Michael Codron on 11 March 1975. GUTS was the first company to perform
the play in the Netherlands.
